![]() I have since switched back to Microsoft Word (360) since this is the best wordprocessor in terms of handling Hebrew (right-to-left functionality) references from Bookends, Styling and Export into InDesign. Basic things like styles, undo, formatting implmementations etc. Mellel just is not on the same level as Word, and I would say that anyone looking to build their own wordprocessor should at least use Microsoft Word as setting a certain standard of what should be. when exporting to docx, all footnotes, from all streams, are exported to the single footnote stream and the attributes of this streams are taken from the first stream in your stream list. Note symbol, Mellel has multiple note streams, Word has only two. I tried also Scrivener and Nisus briefly but didn't find their support better than Mellel when it came to right-to-left support. First, if possible, don't post on the forum what is clearly a bug report. That being said, the undo feature in Mellel was severely lacking and often didn't work, certainly undoing formatting changes didn't work. A number of footnote references from bookends were superscripted. When I converted to rtf from Mellel, the Hebrew words were all reversed, I imagine that is due to it's specific right-to-left implementation. It is not like Microsoft Word not that it claims to be, but Microsoft Word sets a very high standard of what should be standard things in the industry. I have been using Mellel for a good number of months. $29 for the upgrade is more than reasonable.I think this would be of some use to people toying with this workflow. I’m just happy to see it improving, and delighted to see (finally) docx and epub support. It’s complex enough to warrant a 500 page manual, although you can just fire it up and type. Mellel does that.īest of all, like Nisus and unlike most modern software, it’s documented. I’ve been very happy with the way Nisus handles styles, but have always wished for page styles. Character styles get sub-styles, so you can change a sub-style and alter the way adornments like underlining are represented. You get styles for characters, paragraphs, lists, tables, pages, and sections. I need to relearn Mellel’s style system, but it’s a rich resource. For that, you’ll need to export your book as a DOCX file. One significant disadvantage: it won’t let you collaborate with other writers or an editor. Its powerful Compile feature will create an ebook or print-ready PDF. Scrivener will help you structure, research, and write your book. When you use a global style set, it gets copied into the document so the document is portable. It’s prevalent among long-form writers of all kinds. You have global style sets, available for any document. I’m eager to play with styles, which took a little learning curve in earlier versions of Mellel. Up until the release of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Office 2007, Word did not natively support reading or writing ODF documents without a plugin, namely the SUN. With a Bluetooth keyboard, Mellel is a good mobile word processor. Yes, that’s true, I should have mentioned that. I thought I saw a mention of timelines in the release notes, but I think I hallucinated. Well, take me with a grain of salt when I get giddy. Other features in the release notes that I’m looking forward to evaluating include timeline support. I’m not certain if the new Mellel supports mail merge. Nisus may still be required for life, since I use mail merge frequently. I still wish the Compact View was more like Nisus’s Draft view or Word’s Web view, but I may be able to get over it. Tonight I"m going to plow into it and see if it’s going to become my creative writing tool of choice. One remarkable feature present in Mellel is its multilanguage support. It’s never the best to be an early adopter, so I waited about 15 minutes before I bought the upgrade. Real docx export appears to be supported along with epub. Mellel appears to have gotten a lot stronger today, not that it was a weakling to begin with.
